Ancient wisdom for today (20)

August 20th 2012, Day 20, Proverbs 20

“It’s a mark of character to avert quarrels, but fools love to pick fights” Proverbs 20: 3 (The Message)

Today we have another plea to promote peace not discord.

A few months ago a good friend of mine was minding his own business in the queue at a kebab shop late one evening when a complete stranger wandered up to him, punched him in the mouth and then wandered off again.

It’s very difficult to ascribe any normal, human characteristics to someone who would behave that way… and if the writer of today’s proverb is content to use the word fool then who am I to argue!

The tragedy of this kind of action is that the one picking the fight is just as dishonoured by their behaviour as the one with whom they try to pick a fight – though from an earthbound perspective it’s hard to feel sorry for the perpetrator at all, in the larger scheme of things it’s very sad to see anyone sink so far below the level of so-called ‘common human decency’.

With years of experience playing bass in a wide range of situations a dear friend once said that if you were to cut me in half you'd find the word 'bass' written all the way through - yes I know that's so cliche - but that doesn't make it any less true! Like so many people I have more than one 'day' job - but most of my work-time these days is spent working for Interconnected Solutions.
