Detling 2010 – Saturday

The view from the bassline – day one at Detling 2010

I feel very privileged to be asked to play with the band onstage at the Detling Summer Celebration.

Helen and I used to go to Stoneleigh Bible Week (a gathering of thousands of church folk similar to, but on a larger scale than, Detling Summer Celebration) and I used to dream of playing with the band on that stage.

Now I look back and realise that though I thought I was ready for that responsibility, God had more work to do on my character. (Just for the record – He and I are still engaged in that process; and we’ve some way to go yet!)
I’ve had the privilege of playing at Detling for a few years and each time I stand there ready for the evening celebration on the first night I get the same thrill, and pray the same prayer,

“Father, I can’t believe I’m getting to do this, thank you for the privilege, please help me;

– to live up to the responsibility
– to point people to You, not draw them to me
– to remember that you love me just as much whether I’m worshipping You with my bass on a stage or without my bass in a crowd”

With years of experience playing bass in a wide range of situations a dear friend once said that if you were to cut me in half you'd find the word 'bass' written all the way through - yes I know that's so cliche - but that doesn't make it any less true! Like so many people I have more than one 'day' job - but most of my work-time these days is spent working for Interconnected Solutions.
